Server Options?
There are essentially 4 possible server deployment strategies. Each strategy has its own pros and cons and organisations need to be aware of the possibilities and the advantages and disadvantages of each option in order to make an intelligent decision.

Generally speaking, organisations with less than 100 employees or with applications that do not serve more than 1,000 users per day do not require in-house on-site servers unless the organisation in question wants its sensitive financial data or personnel records to be isolated as an intranet from external access.
For smaller organisations that do not have specific requirements for storing sensitive data, outsourced traditional servers or outsourced server web services often more than meets the needs.
For larger organisations, it usually makes sense to manage a more heterogeneous set of servers, which will include traditional servers located in-house, coloc in a data centere and cloud computing technology-based web applications.
The Rise of Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing applications have begun to gain traction and prominence in use cases for organisations who are looking to reduce their dependence and I.T. costs relating to managing dedicated/in-house servers.
Use cases could include microsite launches in relation to a new product launch, collaboration applications for an organisation that is geographically distributed (multiple offices throughout the globe).
